The World's Best Insulation

Everyone’s looking for an energy efficient solution in their home that will cut costs on the electric bill (especially during these hot summer months). While there are many insulation solutions available to achieve that goal, from spray foam to fiberglass, you deserve the safest and best insulation the industry has to offer.

In this article, we’ll be comparing Greenstar panels vs. spray foam insulation (SPF), from materials, R-value (or a material’s resistance to conductive heat flow), toxicity levels, and durability.

Greenstar Panels

  • Contrary to spray foam insulation, Greenstar panels are the only insulation system that incorporates protection from all types of heat transfer. They’re composed of the materials similar to styrofoam cups, so they are very safe and will last forever (never degrade).
  • Greenstar panels are made with 100% recyclable expanded polystyrene and 1lbs density EPS foam–the same material used in a foam coffee cup.
  • The R-value of a 2” Greenstar panel is R38, while a 1.5” panel gives an R30.
  • The air gap between the panel and the roof works like a double pane glass and can vent away hot air.
  • Greenstar Panels are thoroughly tested to be safe, non-toxic, and noncorrosive, are also mold-resistant, and manufactured in a controlled environment where product is not exposed to variable temperatures or harmful toxins.
  • Greenstar panels are Class A Fire Rated, contain Boric acid to keep pests away, and are designed to be pet-friendly.

Spray Foam Insulation

Many types of spray foam insulation come with a range of risks and caveats. For starters, the materials made to create spray polyurethane foam (or SPF) are linked to a slew of health issues for installers and occupants, thanks to isocyanates.

Here are some other factors at a glance:

  • Many of the chemicals used in spray foam are still being tested and their effects aren’t fully understood by the EPA.
  • The R-value is varied for spray foam options: with only 6” giving R19-22 for open-cell and 3” giving R19-22 and 6” giving R38 for closed-cell.
  • Improper installation can mean heat gets trapped between the attic space and roof, causing roof shingles to deteriorate faster. Some property insurance companies may not cover damages from this method.
  • There are many inconsistencies that can cause a home to still not be energy efficient and comfortable after spray foam is installed.
